week by talking foreign policy today and attacking president obama as simply not someone leading. >> i know the president hopes for a safer, freer, and more prosperous middle east allied with us. i share this hope. hope is not a strategy. >> we don't know if that line is going to work, but we know from new polls out today he's made significant headway since the debate. puts a lot of pressure on the vice presidential debate later this week. we'll talk about it at athe bottom of the hour. >> we will see you later on that very topic. also this evening, one battleground state, michigan, will vote on a state constitutional amendment to allowing collective bargaining, unlimited wage increases, and unchecked union power. michigan's governor rick snyder says how it will disrupt his state. they paid hundreds of thousands to a chicago consulting firm for training sessions where employees chant and i quote our forefathers were illegal immigrants. i think that whole story is an outrage. we begin with another monday in the red. the dow closed down 27 points. the naz was off 24. the s&p was down jus
years to the day, t president obama: during the last weeks of this campaign... there will be debates, speeches, and more ads. but if i could sit down with you, in your living room or... around the kitchen table, here's what i'd say. when i took office, we were losing nearly eight hundred... thousand jobs a month, and were mired in iraq. today, i believe that as a nation we are... moving forward again. but we have much more to do to get folks back to work and... make the middle class secure again. now, governor romney believes that with even bigger... tax cuts for the wealthy, and fewer regulations... on wall street, all of us will prosper. in other words, he'd double down on the same trickle-down... policies that led to the crisis in the first place. so what's my plan? first, we create a million new manufacturing jobs... and help businesses double their exports... give tax breaks to companies that... invest in america, not that ship jobs overseas. second, we cut our oil imports in half and produce more... american-made energy. oil, clean coal, natural gas... and ne
% for obama, a four-point spread. that's a 12-point spread in only, what, three weeks, shall we say? and clearly the major development was his strong performs at that debate. >> you know, wolf, it just shows you that voters are still really weighing the pluses and minuses of these two candidates. what i really need to see, though, to make any judgment about how this is going to really affect the election or how it has affected voters is i need to look in the battleground states, don't you think? you need to look at the battleground state of ohio. you need to look at wisconsin. you need to look at iowa. you need to look at virginia, florida, and see whether in fact the race has tightened, particularly in a state like ohio, wolf, where the president had a commanding lead by five or six points. let's see if in that state which the republican campaign has to win, i believe, if mitt romney's to become president, let's see if the poll numbers in that state of ohio which we're going to see as this week proceeds, let's see if those numbers have tightened there because that's going to be a k
nationally. right now, romney at 49%. obama at 45%. that's a significant shift from only a few weeks ago. same poll, likely voters at obama 51%. romney, 43%. that's a dramatic shift indeed. let's get the reaction, jim acosta is traveling with the republican presidential nominee. what are they saying, jim? >> reporter: wolf, i can tell you right now that mitt romney is standing behind me addressing an understandably small crowd of supporters here at newport news, virginia, it is raining buckets here. but that's not dampening the enthusiasm of the romney campaign. they feel very good about this poll that just came out from the pew research center, showing a four-point lead among likely voters for mitt romney over the president. that is a kind of poll that they have not seen in some time. so they're very happy about that. i got some instant response from a senior romney official who told me over an e-mail a few moments ago that they are encouraged by the enthusiasm that they're seeing from supporters who they call energized. we have been seeing that over the last several days at various cam
that obama -- that romney needed going into this, you know, with just a couple weeks away? >> it's very much the narrative he needed, because his campaign was about to be blown away. president obama generally has been running a much better campaign than mitt romney has, but in the last week or so, the mitt romney campaign i think is getting its act together. he had a very, very good debate, obviously. he was more personal on the stump, he was in florida the last few days, he was willing to talk in an emotionally connective way. he gave a foreign policy speech today that was -- had a lot of vagueness in it but was by far and way the best foreign policy speech in my judgment he's made, the most comprehensive on the middle east. he's finding his voice, finding solidity but the polls are really hard to understand right now. not only this pew poll but we had one of the strangest days in polling in gallup i have ever seen. this morning they put out a tracking poll that said the race was tied. this afternoon they put out a second tracking poll saying obama had a five point lead. what can you make o
changed. >> ari, before last week, president obama was showing strong signs of improvement on the economy, closing the gap in most polls. but i want to show you a number. the pew poll shows that 54% of registered voters agree with the phrase doubt that obama knows how to turn the economy around. what do you make of that? >> that's been consistent, and it's been mitt romney's hope. if this is an election about the state of the economy and whether the president is partially or enough to blame for the bad economy, he's going to lose. that's why you see the president has been launching an attack against bain and other things that he was doing. so that's been the weakness and the numbers, too, that i'm looking for on the inside the polls are mitt romney's attributes and his ratings among independents because forget whether the polls are skewed for ds or rs, as long as mitt romney keeps winning independents, chances are mitt romney's going to win. in this pew poll, he won independents today, having nothing to do with whether it's skewed one party or the other. that's something to keep your eye
's poor performance last week. also, this is a campaign where president obama is running as much against paul ryan's ideas as he is against mitt romney. that elevates ryan as well. >> it seems clear in choosing chris van holland they will go against the first ryan budget, the first medicare plan and also the ryan book. they will go after the budget cuts and troo to tag mitt romney with the severity, using the term relatively, of the ryan budget cuts. >> right. rom uh any down played the ryan road map. keep in mind the first ryan budget plan included privatizing social security, at least to a certain extent. that's something ryan then dropped in his subsequent budgets. it was there and he was one of the advocates of the plan to put it in the market. secondly the medicare issue. those entitlements, we'll ha from biden about thursday. a lot of democrats think he dropped the ball not pushing the issues against mitt romney. joe biden will read ryan's book and go after those entitlements. >> up next, as mitt romney focuses on foreign policy we'll get a reality check on the challenges abroad. that the first presidential debate is on wednesday. mitt romney and president obama have been preparing day and night. with both men saying the other guy is going to do a better job. president obama and mitt romney start the week with a crucial showdown on wednesday at the first presidential debate in denver. at a rally in las vegas, president obama tried to manage the speculations. >> i know the media is speculating who is going to have the best zinger. i don't know about that. governor romney, he's a good debater. >> reporter: as both hunker down for intense practice, the polls show americans overwhelming with the election and the president lose. in a new abc news/"washington post" poll out this morning, 63% of registered voters expect president obama to win the election. that's his biggest lead so far when it comes to expectations. but looking at like hi supporters, the race is much closer. president obama leads mitt romney by two points. republican governor chris christie predicted romney could close the gap with president obama after a strong showing on wednesday's debate. >> i'm absol

jokes aside, mitt romney gain soming ground after beating president obama in last week's debate. joining us to talk about the numbers our political editor paul steinhauser. that's pretty stuff. they know how to go there. are we talking about much of a balance here after the debate? >> well, one poll does indicate a small bounce. take a look at this, suzanne. this is from gallop. they do that daily tracking poll. it's a seven-day poll. look what they did. they split it up in two. on the left column, those are the three days prior to last week's debate in denver. you see according to gallop, among registered voters nationwide, the president a five-point advantage. with the sampling area, look at the right. those are october 4th through 6th. the three days after the debate, and gallop indicates it's all tied up there. yeah, i mean, this one poll does indicate that mitt romney did get a bounce. of course, we're going to see a lot more national polls, a lot more polls. most importantly in the battle ground states later today, tomorrow, and wednesday ask thursday. keep your eyes on those state
opportunity for obama in lass week's debate and an opportunity to see going forward is the promise of this election for obama was that he could use this to create a public dialogue about the issue of taxing the wealthy. it has been 22 years now since a single republican member of congress has voted for a tax increase of any kind, an income tax increase. if you're going to have any kind of a long-term deal, a long-term dif set deal, which is what everybody -- not everybody, but a lot of people on both sides who say this is what they want. if you're going to, it will include a tax component on the wealthy. >> if obama campaigns on that and wins and if democrats hold the senate and make gains in the house, that could ratchet up pressure on republicans to make some kind of deal. otherwise, you have the other thing. it's a myth that nothing is going to happen in the lame duck, because if they take democrat off and congress doesn't show up, a lot will happen. december 31st, the expiration of the bush tax cuts. they go away if nothing happens. something ahas to happen. >> i find it extrem
would have done better against the obama that was debating this week? >> i think so, piers, but, you know, it would sound like i am now trying to rewrite history or i would have done better. you know, i've never tried to do any of that looking back and certainly not in anger or bitterness. but i think it is true that during the 2008 campaign, the president or then-senator obama had no record to defend. and one of the reasons why mitt did so well in this debate was because mitt was, i think, very legitimately attacking his record, whether it be the $90 billion in subsidies for energy or a number of the other things that -- the failure of dodd/frank, and so the president had a record to defend this time. but, one, do not underestimate the president of the united states. he will come back strong. i think mitt has to be prepared for that. and also, as you mentioned, these job numbers will give him a bit of -- or something of a boost today. >> we've got the vp debate coming up. you said about joe biden he's the gift that keeps on giving. are you hoping that he's going to be giving some sp
people a chance to get gas at that price? >>guest: actually, it is a failing obama agenda. we use this to highlight to the public how soon, it has only been 3 1/2 years when gas was $1.84 a gallon the week president obama took office. we want president obama to stop the failed policy and implement policies that will bring the price gas back down the we had a set number, 150, and so many shows up we raised the number to 250 and over course of two hours we were able to sell gas for $1.84 in the flint, michigan, area. >>neil: when they hear that is what gas was, when the president first took office, are they surprised? >>guest: they are very surprised. people started lining up at 11:00 and we did not give gas out until 2:30. a lost them wanted their receipt to prove they paid $1.84 for gas. >>neil: do you find it interesting the gas thing has not resonated to the degree that many in the. one of my many crackpot theories is that it has been this way it is long that it is kind of like the pathetic economic numbers which have been muddling and as long as they are not tumbling, men -- am

to write their stories already, what do you mean by that? >> they've been cheerleading for barack obama for weeks now and i think they'll continue, but i'm not concerned about that. this will be the opportunity for mitt romney to talk directly to the american people without that filter and tell them about his plan for the next four years, because the american people, the american middle class know that they've been buried for the past four years, to borrow joe biden's phrase. theyave been buried by debt, the higher taxes and know they're going to be buried further. in my state of virginia, small businesses and families will get hit hard by the obama tax increases as well as the defense cuts. that's why we like the plan of mitt romney, which is going to, on day one, allow us to do things like the keystone pipeline, open up that. those are good high-paying jobs, reverse regulations on coal that have cut 1,200 jobs in virginia. also tell the state that -- >> excuse me. i was going to say, you think he's going to lay all of that out tonight in this 9 0-minute debate, all of those points? >>
misleading statements. "time" magazine story this week runs down statements by both campaigns that are either false or outright propaganda. so for the democrats to call mitt romney a liar is foolish and destructive to their guy, president obama, because the obama campaign has made just as many false and misleading statements as the romney campaign has. beyond that, there is the usual hysteria from ranked idealogues. racial hustler michael eric dyson has injected color into the debate. explaining why president obama could not speak candidly. >> lest we forget this and pretend that doesn't make a difference the specter hanging over his neck that i can't come off as too vigorous because then it looks like i'm an angry black man and because of the angry black man phenomena barack obama engaged man -- here is the reality, obama doesn't have the latitude that white guys who speak with vigor do. >> bill: here's the reality, mr. dyson, you simply cannot analyze anything, anything without injecting race, that's the reality. now, fair-minded americans know vicious garbage when they see and hear it ther
